Worthing Picnic 1890's

Worthing Picnic 1890's

Evan Jones, born in Remsen, NY, with his family moved to Spring Green, WI, and then to Richland Center, WI.  At age 19, he lost his hand in a saw mill accident.  Evan attended business college at La Crosse, WI, before moving to Worthing, SD in 1888 to establish the Jones General Store.
Evan Jones was married at Worthing on Jan. 1, 1896 to Clara Jones, born Aug. 8, 1875 in Austin, MN, daughter of William A. and Anne (Butts-Jenkins) Jones.  To this union six children were born in Worthing: Lowell E., Oct. 16, 1896, died April 11, 1970; baby 1898, died in infancy; Everett R., Dec. 31, 1900, married Cenia Bisgard Feb. 24, 1931, died 1994; Mae, May 13, 1903, married Alfred Jeffery, died 1989; Juleta E., April 4, 1905, married to George L. Goebel in 1931, died 1996; Coila, Oct. 3, 1906, married A. S. Wines in 1931, died Aug. 31, 1977.
The Jones family sold the store in 1907.  Evan bought a farm in Lake Preston, but never farmed.  The family lived in Vienna, SD and Bon Homme, SD briefly, and then moved to Yankton, SD in 1909 where he was employed by the Gurney Nursery Co.  The next move was to Sioux Falls in 1918.  He worked many years as a night security guard at the Morrell Packing Co.  His last job was a home based McNess Products salesman.  The three daughters graduated from Sioux Falls College.  Evan died Oct. 3, 1955, and his wife died Oct. 26, 1962.  Both are buried in the Worthing Cemetery.
Evan Jones had two sisters living on farms near Worthing; Mrs. Robert Gerber, better known as Maggie, and Mrs. William Schoenmann, known by all as Kit; also a younger brother, Will Jones, who operated the Worthing Grain Elevator.
